Tailored Day Services (TDS) Coach Job Description

Primary Function
The Tailored Day Services (TDS) Coach provides direct support and care for clients with developmental and physical disabilities. They are responsible for ensuring clients are continually being supported towards the goal of independence in life and the workforce. TDS Coaches work one-on-one with clients to develop and support individual goals to maximize their clients’ adult life skills, community integration, employment, volunteer activities, and/or pursue post-secondary education. TDS Coaches are committed to providing stability in clients daily life. This position supports and fosters client choice. TDS Coaches report to the TDS Manager and TDS Coordinator, with work schedules determined and set by the TDS Coordinator. TDS Coaches must be flexible and dependable individuals.

Schedule

  • Monday through Sunday shifts are available between the hours of 7am – 9pm
  • Expectations are for TDS Coaches to maintain enough availability to ensure they work 20 to 40 hours per week
  • All coaches are required to also attend additional monthly team meetings and training

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be eligible to work legally in the United States
  • Must be able to consistently arrive on time and maintain regular attendance
  • Must be able to multitask and work independently with clients
  • Must be able to meet schedules and deadlines
  • Must be an organized, flexible, detail-oriented, and dependable individual
  • Must have computer skills, preferably including the use of Apple Products, Microsoft Programs, Google Apps, Dropbox and other technology platforms currently used
  • Must follow all the rules and regulations listed in ICAN’s Policy and Procedures Manual and ICAN’s Code of Conduct and Ethics
  • Must be comfortable working with and directly caring for people with developmental disabilities, whether in a controlled environment or in the community

Education, Experience, and Knowledge

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED
  • Six months experience working with people with disabilities preferred but not required
  • Must have adequate typing skills
  • Must be fluent in English and have basic English writing and grammar skills
  • Bilingual in Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or ASL a plus

Licenses and Other Requirements

  • Must have the ability to pass tuberculosis skin test
  • Submit to a fingerprint clearance through LiveScan before starting employment
  • Must be CPR and First Aid certified or be willing to complete CPR and First Aid certification
  • Must be CPI certified or willing to complete prevention-first training at hire
  • Must have reliable transportation. If taking public transportation, must have the ability to travel to job sites and hiring locations in the South Bay, West Los Angeles, and/or greater Long Beach areas. If using a private vehicle, valid California Driver’s License or valid driver’s license from another state at the time of interview and throughout employment with a clean three year driving record. Willingness to submit to DMV background check and provide evidence of current auto registration and liability insurance.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 70 pounds including pushing a wheelchair
  • Working in indoor and outdoor environments, as well as traveling

Professional Development

  • The TDS Coach must attend scheduled monthly training for approximately two (2) hours as professional development outside of regular coaching shift hours. Meetings may be facilitated in person, via video conference, or via on-demand videos.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Be a key and active member of the Tailored Day Services Team to help TDS clients effectively reach their personal, educational, and/or vocational goals
  • Plan, schedule, attend, and document appointments with their assigned clients
  • Develop individualized curriculum for clients within the TDS program with input from the TDS Coordinator. These activities should provide experience with everyday living skills according to each client’s program goals and objectives
  • Contact the client to confirm their scheduled shift 24 hours in advance
  • Correctly document the location and time of each shift on their Google Calendar and create a calendar event with reminders that include the coach and the client
  • Relay all necessary information to the TDS Coordinator regarding shift times, locations and/or any changes
  • Clock in at the beginning of each shift, break times, and end of each shift; inform the TDS Coordinator of any issues
  • Submit case notes through the client records database at the end of each coaching shift
  • Maintain a running log of what is covered during each shift, using the correctly filed Google Document
  • Immediately inform the TDS Manager & Coordinator of any serious client behavior issues, incidents, performance concerns, or suspected abuse
  • Maintain visual contact with the client at all times when working, except if on breaks or the client is being coached remotely
  • Engage in interactive conversation with the client to encourage opportunities for growth in developing and implementing their noted goals
  • Discuss and demonstrate good work habits, communication skills, and safety procedures for clients
  • Stay engaged with clients and only use cell phones for completing case notes, or communication with supporting staff or emergency personnel
  • Use company laptops ethically, and not for personal tasks
  • Advocate for clients along with the TDS Coordinator to ensure the best quality of care for clients
  • Discuss, demonstrate, observe, and notate client tasks to foster skill development
  • As needed, providing destination and travel training
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with clients, and their parents or guardians
  • Assist and guide clients having difficulties in meeting their proposed standards or goals
  • Maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with coworkers and ICAN staff
